More and more, people are beginning to realize the many benefits of creating art. As iconic artist Pablo Picasso once said, “Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life.” Creative and crafty hobbies such as drawing, painting, photography and sculpting can help lower your stress levels, calm your thoughts and make you feel mentally clear. They serve as the perfect distraction, as they give your brain a break from your usual busy thoughts.
Painting is not only a great way to show off your creativity, but is also good for de-stressing and relaxation. It also can give you a more positive mindset and can increase your critical thinking skills. Not to mention, it’s fun! However, those of us who don’t see themselves as ‘artistic’ are often hesitant to try, perhaps believing that we simply aren’t ‘creative’ enough.
Curious about stepping into the world of art, but it’s a bit beyond your comfort zone? Looking to pick back up the brush after years of setting it aside? Or simply want to immerse yourself in an environment with other creatives and practice your craft? Consider Paint & Groove, where no experience is necessary and everyone’s an artist.
At Paint & Groove there is something for everyone – art classes for both children and adults, art journal classes, rock painting, artist led workshops, figure drawing, open studio, and of course painting parties! The studio itself, located in a hot pink chattel house on the south coast, is colourfully artsy (and cozy too), and provides an inspiring and social atmosphere perfect for expressing your creative side, complete with music, snacks, and sometimes wine!
Mmm, sip, sip, hooray!
Owner and head artist Yasmin Vizcarrondo has been a hobbyist painter all her life, but it wasn’t until she began painting in Barbados back in 2009 that she started to consider it as a career.
“I had the idea of starting the first paint party business on the island. I gathered some friends to come to my house and tried it out. It was a lot of fun! I then had my first public session at Art Splash and it went from there.”
She began to give art and painting classes at various hotels, restaurants, companies and private homes around the island, but finally has a delightful (hot pink) studio to call her own that caters to artists of all levels, with a special interest in beginners.
“I like to teach people who have never held a brush before. I love to see their sense of accomplishment after they finish a painting” Yasmin says.
With different themes offered for each class, Yasmin walks you through a step by step process as a guideline to creating your painting, encouraging everyone to try their own style, colours and techniques, all the while providing assistance if needed. You need bring nothing but your creativity, as everything else is provided for your class, including (but not limited to) palettes, brushes, easels, and canvas.
Bring your coworkers, your family, your friends, or yourself, immerse yourself in a world of colour and creativity, and leave with your own masterpiece!
(M Tip: Paint & Groove is the PERFECT way to spend a girls night out. Bring a bottle and grab a brush!)
