Exquisite coastlines of palm lined, white sandy beaches. Shimmering blue waters lapping gently onto the shore. Rolling fields of rich shades of green. The rugged and mountainous wild of the east. In Barbados, we’re surrounded with overwhelming beauty on a day to day basis – there’s no denying that – and we often flock to shorelines, cliff sides, and forest trails to take it all in.
But do you ever wonder what it would be like to see it all from above? Have you ever wondered how it would feel to soar high above the island with its stunning scenery below?
Take to the skies in a microlight with Paul Nugent for a feeling of true freedom, and an experience you’ll never forget. When it comes to sport aviation for Nugent it isn’t just a hobby or profession, but a lifestyle, and his passion for the industry is undeniably clear. A pilot for 35 years in total, Paul originally worked with hang gliders and paragliders, and it was in 2007 that he and his then best friend – now wife – decided to bring microlighting to Barbados. By late 2009 they took to the air, offering an experience like we’ve never had before, and they haven’t looked back since! So, what is a microlight?
Best described as a ‘flying motorbike’ the microlight has the wing of a hang glider, a sidecar-like, open air cockpit that fits up to two people, and a three wheel tricycle underneath, all motorized by a propeller at the back.
And don’t worry, it’s perfectly safe!
Following a maintenance program just like any other aircraft, the microlight is highly regulated, so sit back, relax and see Barbados in a way you’ve never seen it before while in the safe, experienced hands of Pilot Paul. Flights are offered seven days a week, weather permitting, and there’s a choice between a 25 minute flight that follows the coast up to Bath before returning back to the Light Aeroplane Club over land, or the longer 45 minute flight that takes you as far as Chalky Mount before returning.
Cruising at around 1,500 feet you’ll soar directly beneath the clouds to take in indescribable views of the island, (and sometimes Paul will even let you give the controls a try)! When asked why he’d recommend a microlight flight Paul said, “Purely and simply, it’s the ultimate seat of the pants way to fly – you get the thrill of flying like in the old days in biplanes, but you have the safety of a modern state of the art aircraft…plus there’s nothing that beats being out in the open, and there’s no other aircraft that can beat that view!”
And we can’t help but totally agree…after one flight with Paul we were hooked! Step out of your comfort zone, do something new, and give wings to your dreams.
We promise, once you touch back down, you’ll be begging for more.
