December is upon us!

It’s the time of year when instead of thinking of the big jolly man dressed in red, for us visions of the white bunny from Alice in Wonderland come to mind where he is running around with his pocket watch saying “I’m late, I’m late, for a very important date!”  When and how has life become so demanding?!  Either way, it’s festive season, lots of exciting nights out full of Christmas cheer and warm wishes.  We can’t do any of this of course without wine and most importantly, BUBBLES.  Any occasion to drink bubbly is a good one!

So, let’s talk Champagne!

Platinum Wines, since inception some 20 years ago, has chosen just one Champagne house to represent and that is Champagne Deutz.  It is not a large house, but it is a special one in that it is one of the oldest Grand Marque Champagne houses founded in the village of Ay in 1838 by German immigrant William Deutz.  The belle époque family home is the Deutz Head Quarters, and from one of its ornate reception room, a secret doorway opens into a tunnelled staircase leading down to 3k of chalk cellars where the vast treasure of the Champagne bottles rest peacefully in perfect climate conditions.  Directly above the cellars lie some of Deutz’s prime estate vineyards and a more modern winery.  This makes Deutz unusual to have their HQ., winery, cellars and vineyards all directly connected.

What is a Grand Marque Champagne?

The translation means ‘Great Brand’ and represents international brand awareness, infallible reputation and unyielding customer loyalty. There are only 24 Champagne houses that are considered to have this level of quality and Deutz is one of them.  Deutz, however, takes a step further as it owns 42 hectares of its vineyards and only buys grapes from top grand cru and premier cru vineyards owned by people who they have cultivated relationships with over the years.  Deutz places huge emphasis selecting only grapes in excellent condition and in 2017, 30% of the grapes were rejected in the vineyard because the quality was not good enough. Also, Deutz is one of the relatively few Champagne houses that uses only the most delicate first pressing of the grape, the Tete de Cuvee, selling off the Taille or Second pressing which most houses incorporate to give intensity to their wines.

The whole package of Deutz is fairytale-like with their beautiful stately mansion to their underground secret passage world of wines. It is captivating, and if you haven’t tried this Champagne, Platinum Wines encourages you to do so this season!

For the upcoming Christmas and New Year’s festivities, we’ve gathered a few of of our favourite bubblies for you to try!

The first impressions on the nose are mellow and reminiscent of acacia flowers, confectionery, Reinette apples and brioche.  The wine then gains in volume and its silky texture reveals a successful balance between the freshness of Chardonnay, the fruitiness and structure of Pinot Noir and a touch of vinosity from the Pinot Meunier.

91 Points Wine Spectator

A delicate Cuvee which evokes summer fruit.  It’s shimmering shades of pink reveal fine shining bubbles. Cherry, blackberry, pomegranate and redcurrant form a rounded and expressive bouquet, crisp and enticing. It’s delicately acidulous flavours are given depth by notes of fresh strawberries and raspberries.

Bright straw yellow, with a slightly golden tone. White flowers, fresh fruits, breadcrumbs and light toast with notes of dried fruit, hazelnut and walnut.  Well balanced with good acidity and fine, crisp foam. Creamy and silky on the mid-palate with a fresh, fruity and persistent finish.

The 2013 Traditional Method sparkling is a traditional blend of 66% Pinot Noir and 33% Chardonnay. It tickles your nose with notes of almond biscuit, flint, and a hint of smoke. A lacey mousse coats the palate while brisk bubbles stimulate the tongue with tenacity. Clean, fine white stone fruit infused with Asian pear to seduce the taste buds and leave you eager for a next delightful sip. 2016 Decanter World Wine Awards – Commended.
